Norway's three dependent territories

Svalbard and Jan Mayen are the only integrated parts of the Kingdom of Norway, not allocated to counties.
They are not administratively related. Svalbard is subject to a special status granted by the 1925 Svalbard Treaty. Svalbard is administered by the Governor of Svalbard, which is subordinate to the Norwegian Ministry of Justice and Public Security. Unlike the rest of Norway (including Jan Mayen), Svalbard is a free economic zone and a demilitarized zone, and is not part of the Schengen Area nor the European Economic Area.
Norway has three dependent territories (Norwegian: biland), all uninhabited and located in the Southern Hemisphere. The 1933 Dependency Act establishes that Norwegian criminal law, private law and procedural law apply to the dependencies, as do other laws that explicitly state they are valid in each dependency. The act further establishes that all land in the dependencies belongs to the state.
Bouvet Island was claimed in in 1930.
Peter I Island was claimed in 1931.
Queen Maud Land was claimed as a Norwegian possession in 1938. Queen Maud Land has no permanent population, although there are 12 active research stations housing a maximum 40 scientists.
Jan Mayen Island is an integral part of the Kingdom of Norway. Since 1995, Jan Mayen has been administered by the County Governor of the northern Norwegian county of Nordland, to which it is closest. However, some authority over Jan Mayen has been assigned to the station commander of the Norwegian Defence Logistics Organisation, a branch of the Norwegian Armed Forces.
